TExES Business Finance 6-12 Exam

TExES Business and Finance 6-12 (276) is used in the state of Texas to ensure entry-level teacher candidates are qualified to serve in this capacity. It is a computer-administered exam that includes 100 selected-response questions, with a time allotment of 5 hours. Of the 5 hours, 15 minutes is designated to the tutorial and compliance agreement, while 4 hours and 45 minutes is actual testing time. Some of the questions may not count toward your score. The questions on the exam relate to grade levels 6th to 12th.

If you require special accommodations, you may make this request. Most requests must be made prior to the day of the exam.

Some of the available accommodations include additional testing time, screen magnification software, and Braille format exam.

What are the domains covered on the exam?

The five domains assessed are Finance, Business Management, Ethics, Law, Business Communication and international Business, Technology and Information Systems, and Leadership and Career Development. Each domain consists of a set of competencies that are tested.

Finance – 20%

Competency 001: Teacher comprehends and shares information regarding money matters.

Competency 002: Teacher comprehends and shares information regarding banking and financial services.

Competency 003: Teacher comprehends and shares information regarding securities and investments.

Competency 004: Teacher comprehends and shares information regarding insurance operation.

Competency 005: Teacher comprehends and shares information regarding basic accounting.

Competency 006: Teacher comprehends and shares information regarding advanced accounting.

Competency 007: Teacher comprehends and shares information regarding financial analysis and problem-solving.

Competency 008: Teacher utilizes probability to predict results and manage risk.

Business Management – 19%

Competency 009: Teacher comprehends business ownership types and the skills and processes of entrepreneurship.

Competency 010: Teacher comprehends management principles of a business environment.

Competency 011: Teacher comprehends human relations and resource management.

Ethics, Law, Business Communication and International Business – 22%

Competency 012: Teacher comprehends issues with ethics and social responsibility, with regard to business and personal behavior.

Competency 015: Teacher comprehends the fundamentals of communication, and uses them when communicating in business.

Technology and Information Systems – 21%

Leadership and Career Development – 18%

Competency 020: Teacher comprehends work-based learning, as well as leadership and career development.

Competency 021: Teacher comprehends the use of interpersonal, employment, and organizational skills in business.

Competency 022: Teacher comprehends the availability of leadership and community service prospects via student organization activities.

You can do so online, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What is the cost of the exam?

The cost of TExES Business and Finance 6-12 (276) is $116. Additional fees may apply.

What are the testing dates and locations?

TExES Business and Finance 6-12 (276) is offered year-round, at various sites in Texas and other states in the U.S.

What should I do the day of the exam?

Arrive at the testing center at least 15 minutes early. This will afford you the time necessary to check-in and get settled to take the exam.

Bring two valid forms of identification. One must have your name, signature, and photo, while the other includes your name and signature, at a minimum.

You are prohibited from bringing personal items into the testing room, such as a jacket, backpack, purse, briefcase, food/drink, calculator, cell phone, or any other electronic devices.

Can I take a break during the exam?

Although you are allowed to take a break, if necessary, the exam clock will not stop while you are on break. This means taking a break will lessen the amount of time you have for actual test-taking.

What happens after I take the exam?

Your score report will be available within a week of the date you took the exam. If requested, your report will be emailed to you.

What is the passing score?

The passing score for this exam is 240 or greater.

What happens if I don’t pass the exam?

You must wait a minimum of 45 days from the day you took the test, in order to take it again.

You are allowed no more than 5 chances to take the exam. If you are unable to pass the exam by the fifth attempt, you must request a test limit waiver from the State Board for Educator Certification.

How Can I Prepare for the TExES Business and Finance 6-12 Test?

That’s a great question.  We’ve broken down the answer into three parts.

  1. Do yourself a favor and study.  Do not walk in unprepared. We have recommended prep materials below, but that only helps if you actually try.  Plus, studying is actually proven to be the best antidote to test anxiety.
  2. Take care of yourself.  Make sure you’re eating well, exercising, and sleeping.  All of these things are scientifically linked to brain performance.  If you take care of your body, you’ll be helping your grades.
