TExES Art EC-12 (178) Exam

The TExES Art EC-12 test is given to prospective educators in the state of Texas to assess whether they have the skills necessary for an entry-level public-school educator position.

How can I register for the exam?

You may register for the exam on the Texas Educator Certification Examination Program website. From there you will be given step by step instructions.

How is the exam formatted?

The five-hour computer-based exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions. The exam tests you on four different domains:

Creating Works of Art (32% of the test)

This section of the exam tests whether the test taker understands how ideas for creating art are developed as well as the skills and techniques needed for personal and creative expression in a variety of different art medias.

Art, Culture, and History (27% of the test)

This section of the exam tests an individual’s ability to understand how the visual arts shape and reflect history, society, and culture. The test taker must also be able to compare artworks from various countries and cultures from ancient times to the present.

Aesthetic Knowledge and Analysis of Art (14% of the test)

In this section the test taker must understand skills and knowledge that contribute to visual perception as well as visual literacy. The individual must also know how to analyze and critique art from different eras and cultures.

Art Education (27% of the test)

For the art education section, the individual must understand the curriculum and instructional strategies for art education. The individual must also understand lessons and activities that develop students’ thinking and productive skills so that they can create art.

What are the testing dates and locations?

The exam is given year-round by appointment only at Pearson VUE testing centers located in Texas and nationwide. You can find a location near you by going to the Pearson VUE website. Seats are given on a first-come, first-served basis.

Are there testing accommodations for people with disabilities?

Yes. If you have a disability you must fill out an alternative testing arrangements request with all necessary documentation of your disability. Keep in mind that each testing center is already equipped with wheelchair access.

How much does it cost to take the exam?

The fee for the exam is $116. You may pay by debit or credit card (Visa or Mastercard only). Cash and checks are not accepted. Once you register, it is valid for 170 days. If you do not schedule and take your exam during that period, your registration will expire, and you will not receive a refund.

What if I need to cancel my exam or change my exam date, time, or testing location?

If you need to cancel your exam or change your exam date, time, or location you may do so through your account. You must do it at least 48 hours before your scheduled exam appointment.

What if I need to withdraw from my exam?

If you need to withdraw and you haven’t scheduled your exam date yet, you may do so through your account. If you have scheduled your exam the first thing you need to do is cancel it through your account 48 hours before your exam, and then you must submit a withdrawal request through your account.

How will exam day be?

On the day of your exam you will want to arrive at least fifteen minutes early. If you arrive late you may not be allowed inside to take the exam. You must bring two forms of identification. Identification must be valid and contain your photograph. Electronics and other personal belongings will not be allowed in the exam room with you.

When will I receive my scores?

You will receive your exam scores 7 to 10 days after taking the exam. Your scores will be posted in your Educator Certification Online System (ECOS) account.

How Can I Prepare for the TExES Art EC-12 (178) Exam?

That’s a great question.  We’ve broken down the answer into three parts.

  1. Do yourself a favor and study.  Do not walk in unprepared. We have recommended prep materials below, but that only helps if you actually try.  Plus, studying is actually proven to be the best antidote to test anxiety.
  2. Take care of yourself.  Make sure you’re eating well, exercising, and sleeping.  All of these things are scientifically linked to brain performance.  If you take care of your body, you’ll be helping your grades.
