Praxis Technology Education (5051) Exam

The Praxis Technology Education (5051) Exam is designed to ensure individuals are prepared to serve as a technology education teacher.

Special testing accommodations are available for those who require them and have a condition approved by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

What is the format of this exam?

You will be given 2 hours to complete the 120 selected-response questions that make up this computer-delivered exam. Although not all of the questions will count toward your score, be sure to answer all of them.

What are the categories and topics covered on this exam?

The six areas that will be tested on this exam are:

Technology and Society – 15% of questions

The Technology and Society category covers topics such as nature of technology, technology education, invention and innovation, how other fields impact technological development, critical changes in technology, how marketing, economics, and environment impact the development of technology, effects of technology on society, and the relationships between engineering, math, science, and technology.

Technological Design and Problem-Solving – 20% of questions

The Technological Design and Problem-Solving category covers topics such as the design process, software tools, solutions to design problems, how to evaluate and optimize designs, systems thinking, technological systems, and apply the design process to problems in information technology and manufacturing and construction.

Energy, Power, and Transportation – 15% of questions

The Energy, Power, and Transportation category covers topics such as control systems, energy utilization systems, transportation systems, processes in transportation operations, forms of energy, and safety practices when working with power and energy.

Information and Communication Technologies – 15% of questions

The Information and Communication Technologies category covers topics such as concepts and terminology of information systems, using operating systems, network structures, makeup of communication systems, and legal and ethical issues of communications and information technologies.

Manufacturing and Construction Technologies – 15% of questions

The Manufacturing and Construction Technologies category covers topics such as management functions of construction and manufacturing, efficiency of production, converting raw materials to industrial materials, constraints on structural designs, systems and subsystems of buildings, and static and dynamic loads.

Pedagogical and Professional Studies – 20% of questions

The Pedagogical and Professional Studies category covers topics such as selecting appropriate instructional content, comprehend importance of designing and implementing instructional activities, use assessment methods, create and maintain a healthy learning environment, and knows history and trends of technology education.

What is the best way to register for the exam?

Register online. Payment can be made with a credit or debit card, or PayPal. Once you register, print the admission ticket.

What is the cost of the exam?

The cost of the Praxis Technology Education Exam is $120.

What are the testing locations?

This exam is administered at various sites throughout the world.

What should I do the day of the exam?

Arrive early to allow for time to park and get checked in.

You will be required to present photo identification. This ID must have your name and signature, as well as a photo.

Some of the items that are prohibited from the testing area are a calculator, cell phone, and purse. Consult with the test center if you have questions about other items that are not allowed.

What happens after I take the exam?

You will be shown your unofficial score report immediately after testing. Approximately 10-16 days after the testing window closes, you will have access to your official score report.

What happens if I don’t pass the exam?

You are allowed to re-take the exam once every 21 days. Each time you re-test, you must submit an application and pay the associated exam fee.

How Can I Prepare for the Praxis Technology Education (5051) Exam?

That’s a great question.  We’ve broken down the answer into three parts.

  1. Do yourself a favor and study.  Do not walk in unprepared. We have recommended prep materials below, but that only helps if you actually try.  Plus, studying is actually proven to be the best antidote to test anxiety.
  2. Take care of yourself.  Make sure you’re eating well, exercising, and sleeping.  All of these things are scientifically linked to brain performance.  If you take care of your body, you’ll be helping your grades.
