Exam Purpose and Background

The New York State Teacher Certification Examinations (NYSTCE) program has developed the Multi-Subject Teachers of Early Childhood exam to ensure that prospective teachers have the knowledge and preparedness necessary to effectively deliver educational curriculum to young learners in the state of New York from birth through the second grade.

When to Arrive

Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your assigned test time. If you’re more than 15 minutes late, you won’t be allowed to take the test and you will forfeit your testing fees.

Test Duration: You’ll have a total of five hours and 30 minutes to complete the three parts of the test.

What to Expect During Your Exam

Format/Number of Questions: This is a three-part, computer-based test that has a total of 120 selected-response test questions and two constructed response questions.

Content Categories

There are three primary parts to the exam. Here’s an overview of each of these segments.

Part 1:
Literacy and English Language Arts (About 33% with 41 Questions)

This portion of the exam covers a range of topics, including language arts and literacy, foundational literacy skills, English language arts and synthesis, analysis and application question.

In this section, you’ll be asked to complete 40 selected-response questions and one constructed response question.

Part 2:
Mathematics (About 33% with About 41 Questions)

During this section of the test, you’ll be assessed on different mathematics concepts, including operations and numbers, algebraic thinking and operations, data, geometry and measurement, mathematics instruction, and analysis, synthesis and application.

In this section, you’ll be asked to complete 40 selected-response questions and one constructed response question.

Part 3:
Arts and Sciences (About 33% with About 40 Questions)

During the part of the test, you’ll complete a number of items pertaining to arts and sciences, including science and technology, social studies, and fine arts, health and fitness, family and consumer science, and career development.

During this portion, you’ll be asked to complete 40 selected-response questions.

Calculating Your Passing Score: You’ll need a score of 520 for each of the three parts to successfully pass the entire exam.

How Can I Prepare for the NYSTCE Multi Subject: Teachers of Early Childhood Test?

That’s a great question.  We’ve broken down the answer into three parts.
