If you’re aiming to become a nurse (or any other type of health professional), there’s little doubt you’ve worked long and hard during these past few years. Now you’re on the verge of hitting an important milestone: entering either your allied health or nursing school of choice. Congratulations on this achievement! However, before you can enroll, you will first need to complete one last hurdle. You will have to earn a passing score on the ATI TEAS test.
You may be wondering exactly what the ATI TEAS exam is, and why you’re required to take it before you can apply to allied health/nursing school. On this page, you will not only find the answer to that question, but also a breadth of material explaining what to expect from the ATI TEAS test and several tools designed to help you prepare for the test as thoroughly as possible.
What Is the ATI TEAS?
Before we address the latter topics, however, we should first go into the purpose of the ATI TEAS exam. The ATI TEAS is also known by its full name, the “Test of Essential Academic Skills.” Each piece of content featured on this exam is meant to cater to the skills you will need to thrive in the nursing school environment. By earning a passing score on this test, you will prove you possess all the capabilities and knowledge necessary to master nursing school curriculum.
Anyone who is interested in the medical field understands that it is constantly changing and evolving. As such, the ATI TEAS has undergone several revamps over the years since its release. The current model of the exam is known as the “ATI TEAS 6.” It replaces the TEAS 5, which was last administered in the year 2016. With the revamp comes numerous changes to the test’s content, such as rearrangements of the material itself, as well as the ability to use a calculator during the test’s Math section.
How Does the ATI TEAS Work?
Now that we’ve gone into what the ATI TEAS is, it’s time to cover exactly what you can expect to see on the test. In terms of content, the ATI TEAS test isn’t very different from other standardized tests you may have taken in the past. Its content splits up into four core sections: English and Language Usage, Reading, Science, and Math. Each of these sections are timed and feature a selection of multiple choice questions. In all, you can expect the exam to last a total of 209 minutes (or around 3 1/2 hours), and to possess 170 questions. Each question featured on the exam will pertain strictly to the types of material you learn at a high school level, so you don’t have to worry about brushing up on any advanced subjects.
It is worth noting that a small portion of the questions will not count toward your overall score. These questions are known as “pretest questions,” and will feature questions that may potentially be published on future editions of the ATI TEAS 6. You can consider these questions to be more “experimental”; they are being administered to you to determine whether they are suitable to be featured on later versions of the exam, or whether they should be revised to fit better into the test’s content and to match test takers’ skill levels.
Although these questions will not lower your score, you won’t be able to tell them apart from the “real” test questions; as such, you should strive to answer all questions featured on the test as thoroughly and accurately as you can. Each section of the ATI TEAS will feature a set of pretest questions.
We will break down the subject areas of the ATI TEAS further below.
The ATI TEAS Reading subtest will likely feel familiar to you. You will be presented with reading passages, which you will have to read and then answer questions about with regards to its content. You can expect the Reading subtest to last just over an hour—or, more specifically, 64 minutes. During this time, you will have to complete approximately 53 test questions.
Each question on the ATI TEAS Reading subtest will fall under one of four categories:
- Pretest Questions
- Key Ideas and Details
- Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
- Craft and Structure
The ATI TEAS Math section will last 54 minutes in all, and is made up of 36 questions. Its knowledge categories include:
- Pretest Questions
- Measurement and Data
- Numbers and Algebra
The Science subtest will encompass several different scientific subjects. You will be given 63 minutes to complete this section’s 53 questions, which will cover the following knowledge categories:
- Pretest Questions
- Human Anatomy and Physiology
- Scientific Reasoning
- Life and Physical Sciences
English and Language Usage
The English and Language Usage subtest is similar to Writing tests you may have taken previously, minus the essay. It is the shortest part of the exam, lasting 28 minutes and featuring only 28 questions. Its subjects are:
- Pretest Questions
- Conventions of Standard English
- Vocabulary Acquisition
- Knowledge of Language
How Will the ATI TEAS Test Be Scored?
Like previous versions of the ATI exam, the ATI TEAS 6 will give you your score in percentage form. It will specifically range between 0 percent and 100 percent. You can expect to receive your score a full 48 hours after finishing the exam.
