ATI TEAS Science

There’s little arguing that science and the medical field are deeply intertwined, no matter which career you’re planning to enter. Much of the medical advancements and technology allied health professionals and nurses rely on and work with today were all crafted through important scientific studies. On top of this, if it were not for science, we would have far less knowledge of how the human body works. This subject is one of the most important elements of any medical job.

Because of this, it may serve as little surprise that Science is a significant feature on the ATI TEAS 7. In fact, it is one of four subjects you’ll find on the exam, with the other three being English and Language Usage, Math, and Reading. Earning a passing score on the ATI TEAS 7 Science test, as well as the ATI TEAS exam as a whole, is vital if you’re planning on applying to an allied health or nursing program in the near future. The entire purpose of this exam is to gauge your preparedness to handle allied health/nursing curriculum. You cannot apply without taking this exam and scoring well on it.

We have prepared multiple pages’ worth of information about the ATI TEAS exam. Here you’ll find everything you need to know about the ATI TEAS Science subtest.

What Is the ATI TEAS Science Subtest?

The Science subtest makes up a good percentage of the ATI TEAS 7, almost equaling the amount of time and questions you’ll receive for the Reading subtest. More specifically, you will receive approximately 60 minutes to complete 50 questions. Every question on the exam will be in multiple choice format. There are four knowledge categories featured on the ATI TEAS 7 Science subtest—Pretest Questions, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Scientific Reasoning, and Life and Physical Sciences. We will go over each category of this exam in further detail below.

Pretest Questions

This “knowledge category” is the only one that doesn’t pertain to any specific subject. Rather, it is composed of potential future questions that the test takers coming after you may encounter on later formats of the ATI exam. The writers of the ATI TEAS 7 place pretest questions on each exam as a way of figuring out which questions are most suitable for future tests and which questions may be too difficult or not as relevant. Getting an incorrect answer on a pretest question will not lower your test score.

It is worth noting that there are no special markers as far as which questions are pretest questions and which are the real thing. We encourage you to be diligent and take each test question seriously to ensure the best possible outcome.

Human Anatomy and Physiology

The Human Anatomy and Physiology category will, as the name describes, focus on how the human body works. You will have to utilize your knowledge of various bodily systems and their functions. More specifically, you will have to answer questions about the skeletal, respiratory, immune, cardiovascular, endocrine, gastrointestinal, reproductive, and neuromuscular structures of the body. You will also have to answer questions regarding the most basic aspects of human anatomy.

Biology

The Biology knowledge category is new on the TEAS 7, and deals specifically with various subtopics of biology, such as cell structure, protein structure, and microorganisms. You will be expected to describe cell structure, function, and organization; describe the relationship between genetic material and the structure of proteins; apply concepts underlying Mendel’s laws of inheritance; describe the structure and functions of the basic macromolecules in a biological system; and describe the role of microorganisms in a disease.

Chemistry

The Chemistry knowledge category is another new addition to the TEAS 7, and deals specifically with various subtopics of chemistry, such as reactions between different chemicals, specific substances, and atomic structure. You will be expected to recognize basic atomic structure, know the physical properties and changes of matter, describe chemical reactions, demonstrate how conditions affect chemical reactions, understand properties of solutions, and describe the concept of acids and bases.

Scientific Reasoning

Questions under the Scientific Reasoning category will deal with your basic understanding of the scientific method and everything related to it. You will be expected to examine a given scenario and how it fits into the scientific method, figure out the scientific measurements of a given object, deduce how specific items and occurrences relate to one another, and use your knowledge of the scientific method to evaluate why a written analysis does not make sense.
