ATI TEAS English and Language Usage

There are very few industries in today’s world that do not rely on writing ability in any shape or form. While it may not seem that way immediately, writing is quite important to every type of medical career, especially if you are planning to get involved with allied health or nursing. Part of your job in either of these fields will involve sending information back and forth, much of which must be formally written based on observations and conversations with the patients you will see and work with on a regular basis. In order to be able to communicate with your colleagues, you will have to be able to express yourself fluidly and coherently through writing.

Writing has long been an important part of the ATI TEAS 6, also known as the “Test of Essential Academic Skills.” This exam is meant to gauge whether or not you are fully prepared to handle the curriculum offered in today’s allied health/nursing programs based on your capabilities with English and Language Usage, Reading, Science, and Math. The information on this page will cater to the English and Language Usage subtest.

More About the ATI TEAS English and Language Usage Subtest

The English and Language Usage subtest is a bit different from other writing exams you may have taken previously; it has no essay section. Rather, you will only have to answer a series of questions written in multiple choice format. To answer these questions, you must read a small selection, which you will have to glean for errors and contextual information.

This subtest is, notably, the absolute shortest you’ll find on the ATI TEAS test as a whole. It clocks in with a 28 minute time span, and possesses only 28 questions. Each question will fall under at least one of four knowledge categories: Pretest Questions, Conventions of Standard English (6 percent), Vocabulary Acquisition (4 percent), and Knowledge of Language (6 percent). Keep reading to learn more about each of these categories and how they affect the contents of the exam.

Pretest Questions

The medical field is constantly evolving, which means the ATI TEAS exam has to grow along with these advancements. To ensure the test constantly meets the standards set forth by allied health experts, the writers of the ATI TEAS 6 release a set of pretest questions—”preview” questions for later formats of the exam that you will essentially be giving a “test run.” Since the pretest questions are included for investigational purposes, how you answer will not harm your score. At the same time, it is worth noting that there will not be any way to tell a pretest question from a normal one, so you will want to take all questions featured on the test seriously.

Conventions of Standard English

The Craft and Structure category focuses on the more critical aspects of writing, paying special attention to the author’s choices and how they convey meaning. You will be expected to consider the perspective of the author of a given work, as well as why they may have written that work; define words based on how the author used them in the work; acknowledge the different ways a written work can be organized; and comprehend the various types of subjective statements an author can make, as well as how they differ from objective statements.

Vocabulary Acquisition

Questions under the Vocabulary Acquisition knowledge category will deal with your understanding of words. You will be expected to define specific words based on their roots, suffixes, and prefixes, as well as pick up what a word means based on how it is used within a given sentence.

Knowledge of Language

The Knowledge of Language category involves your comprehension of organization, diction, and other critical elements of writing. Its questions will ask you to put together a paragraph in the most coherent manner possible; pick new vocabulary to strengthen the meaning of a sentence; utilize your understanding of different aspects of writing; and tell casual writing apart from formal writing.
