Exam Background and Purpose
The Aviation Selection Test Battery-E, or ASTB-E, is used by the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard to help select candidates for aviation training programs. Portions of the test are also used by the Navy for selection into Officer Candidate School for some officer communities.
Some candidates take the full ASTB-E battery, while others take only the Officer Aptitude Rating portion, commonly called the OAR. Aviation applicants generally take the full ASTB-E, while some non-aviation officer applicants may only need the OAR portion. ASTB-E vs. OAR
The OAR portion includes the Math Skills Test, Reading Comprehension Test, and Mechanical Comprehension Test. These three sections are used to produce the Officer Aptitude Rating score.
The full ASTB-E includes the OAR subtests plus Aviation and Nautical Information, the Naval Aviation Trait Facet Inventory, and the Performance Based Measures battery. Aviation candidates usually need the full battery because aviation selection decisions use aviation-related score components in addition to the OAR.
Test Overview
The ASTB-E is delivered through the APEX testing system. The Math Skills Test, Reading Comprehension Test, Mechanical Comprehension Test, Aviation and Nautical Information Test, and Naval Aviation Trait Facet Inventory are administered in computer-adaptive format. Adaptive sections do not let you return to earlier questions.

How Is the ASTB-E Scored?
