What Is the CWOCN Certification?

CWOCN stands for Certified Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse. The credential demonstrates specialized nursing knowledge across all three WOC practice areas:

Who Is Eligible for CWOCN Certification?

First-time candidates must have a current registered nurse license and hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. You must also qualify through either the Traditional Pathway or the Experiential Pathway.

Traditional Pathway

You may qualify by graduating from an accredited Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing Education Program. Generally, the program must have been completed within the five years before you apply. If it was completed more than five years ago, you must establish eligibility through the Experiential Pathway.

Experiential Pathway

If you are qualifying through professional experience rather than a recently completed accredited WOC nursing education program, the requirements apply separately to each specialty.

The practice hours and continuing education used for the Experiential Pathway must be earned after receiving your bachelor’s degree and while practicing as an RN.

How Does the CWOCN Exam Process Work?

To earn the CWOCN credential, you take three individual computerized multiple-choice exams:

Passing all three within 12 months of your application earns the combined CWOCN credential. The exams are administered individually, so they can be scheduled consecutively or on different days.

How Many Questions Are on the CWOCN Exams?

Each of the three specialty exams contains 120 multiple-choice questions:

• 110 scored questions
• 10 unscored pretest questions

The unscored questions are mixed in with the scored questions and are not identified. You should therefore treat every question as though it counts toward your score.

You have 120 minutes to complete each specialty exam. If you take all three examinations, that means you will answer a total of 360 questions across the three tests, with two hours allotted to each exam.

What Is on the CWOCN Exams?

The current wound, ostomy, and continence examinations are based on WOCNCB’s job task analysis of current specialty nursing practice. New exam forms based on the current content outlines went into use in 2025.

Although the specific clinical material differs among the three specialties, each exam is organized around five major areas of professional practice:

Wound Care Exam

The wound exam assesses your ability to evaluate patients and wounds, identify factors affecting healing, prevent skin and wound complications, recommend appropriate interventions, and develop and evaluate individualized plans of care.

• Wound-bed preparation
• Debridement
• Topical treatments and dressings

Ostomy Care Exam

The ostomy exam focuses on the assessment and management of fecal and urinary diversions, fistulae, ostomy-related complications, and percutaneous tubes and drains.

• Stoma-site selection and management
• Pouching systems and accessories
• Peristomal skin health
• Management of fecal and urinary diversions

Continence Care Exam

The continence exam evaluates knowledge and skills related to urinary and bowel dysfunction across the lifespan.

• Behavioral management strategies
• Bladder and bowel training
• Pelvic floor interventions
• Catheter and containment management
• Skin protection and complication prevention

How Much Does CWOCN Certification Cost?

The current WOCNCB examination fees are based on the number of specialties included in your application:

Because CWOCN certification requires the wound, ostomy, and continence specialties, a first-time candidate applying for all three currently pays the three-specialty fee of $610.

How Do I Apply and Schedule the Exams?

WOCNCB certification applications and exam scheduling are handled through PSI.

1. Complete the online WOCNCB examination application.
2. Provide documentation showing that you meet the RN licensure, education, and eligibility requirements.
3. Pay the applicable examination fee.
4. After your application is approved, you will receive a Notice to Schedule.
5. Schedule your examinations through PSI.

For initial candidates, approved exams can currently be scheduled during the following six-month eligibility period. The three specialty exams may be taken sequentially or on separate days.

How Is the CWOCN Exam Scored?

WOCNCB uses scaled scores for its certification examinations. Because different versions of an exam can vary slightly in difficulty, WOCNCB determines an appropriate passing point for each examination form.

WOCNCB does not publicly state a fixed number of questions that you must answer correctly to pass. You should therefore avoid relying on unofficial claims that a particular percentage or raw score guarantees a passing result.

Your examination results are provided immediately after testing. Your score report is also available through your PSI test-taker account and is sent by email.

What Happens If I Do Not Pass?

You can retake an unsuccessful specialty examination, but you must wait at least 30 days before retesting. Retesting is limited during your eligibility period, so leaving yourself enough time between attempts is important.

If you are pursuing the combined CWOCN credential, remember that the wound, ostomy, and continence exams must be successfully completed within the required timeframe for the tri-specialty credential.

How to Prepare for the CWOCN Exams

Because the CWOCN credential involves three separate specialty exams, trying to study wound, ostomy, and continence material as one enormous subject is inefficient. Break your preparation into the three individual exam blueprints.

1. Start with the current content outlines. Organize your study plan around the knowledge and skills actually measured on the wound, ostomy, and continence exams.
2. Identify your weakest specialty. Clinical experience in one WOC area does not automatically mean you are equally prepared in the other two.
3. Practice application questions. The exams assess more than simple recall. Be ready to interpret clinical information and choose appropriate assessments, interventions, treatments, and referrals.
4. Study patient-centered decision-making. Care planning, patient education, caregiver education, and interdisciplinary referral appear throughout the exam outlines.
5. Practice with a two-hour limit. Each examination contains 120 questions in 120 minutes, so you need to maintain roughly a one-question-per-minute pace.
6. Review every missed practice question. Determine why the correct answer is appropriate and why the alternatives are less appropriate.

How Long Is CWOCN Certification Valid?

WOCNCB credentials are valid for five years. Current certificants can recertify either by taking the applicable certification examinations again or through WOCNCB’s Professional Growth Program (PGP).

The Professional Growth Program allows eligible nurses to demonstrate continuing competence through a portfolio of activities such as continuing education, specialty practice, teaching, research, writing, volunteer activities, and professional projects.
