What Is the ASWB Master’s Exam?

ASWB is introducing updated social work licensing exams on August 3, 2026. The version of the Master’s exam you receive is determined by the date of your testing appointment.
Which Study Materials Should You Use?
- Use the 2018 blueprint if your test appointment is before August 3, 2026.
- Use the 2026 blueprint if your test appointment is on or after August 3, 2026.
- Check the date printed in your Authorization to Test email.
- Make sure practice tests and study guides match your scheduled exam version.
- Do not assume that materials designed for the older blueprint reflect the new exam structure.
ASWB Master’s Exam Format
The ASWB Master’s exam is administered by computer at Pearson VUE testing centers. Questions use a multiple-choice format with three or four answer options.
Unscored pretest questions are mixed throughout the examination. These questions are being evaluated for possible use on future exams and cannot be identified while testing.

ASWB Master’s Exam Scores
The examination is reported as pass or fail. There is no single fixed number of correct answers that applies to every exam form because individual forms may vary slightly in difficulty.
Only scored questions count toward your result. Unscored pretest questions do not increase or decrease your final score.
Retaking the ASWB Master’s Exam
Candidates who do not pass generally must wait 90 days before another testing appointment. A new registration and examination fee are required for each attempt.
90-Day Waiting-Period Waiver
A candidate may be able to request permission to test before the end of the standard waiting period when:
- The candidate’s most recent score was within 10 correct answers of the passing score.
- The state or provincial licensing board allows waiting-period waivers.
- The candidate follows the current ASWB waiver-request process.
Some licensing boards limit the number of examination attempts. Check with your board before registering for another attempt.
