RHIT is a computer-based test that includes 130-150 multiple-choice questions. The amount of time you have to complete this exam is 3.5 hours.
Before registering to take this exam, candidates must have completed a CAHIIM-accredited Health Information Management program or foreign HIM program that has a reciprocity agreement with AHIMA.
For individuals with medical conditions covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act, special testing accommodations may be requested in writing. Some of these accommodations include extended testing time, separate testing room, screen magnifier/zoom technology, and a reader.

Data Content, Structure, and Information Governance
This domain will address tasks such as using healthcare standards, utilizing health information guidelines, defining the legal health record, maintaining the reliability of the legal health record, auditing the legal health record, and organizing document control.
Access, Disclosure, Privacy, and Security
This domain will address tasks such as making sure PHI using laws and guidelines are disclosed, identifying who has access to the health record, educating internal and external customers, evaluating health record disposition, and performing security and privacy audits.
Data Analytics and Use
This domain will address tasks such as summarizing and analyzing data, scrutinizing privacy and security audits, reporting data, composing healthcare statistics and reports, and evaluating healthcare statistics.
Revenue Cycle Management
This domain will address tasks such as coding medical record documentation, asking questions of clinicians, performing utilization review, overseeing denials, leading coding audits, offering coding education, observing discharged not final billed (DNFB), and evaluating the case mix.
Compliance
This domain will address tasks such as improving departmental procedures, executing quality assessments, evaluating risks, informing of noncompliance, with regard to health information, making sure of HIM compliance, and staying abreast of regulatory changes.
Leadership
This domain will address tasks such as giving information on HIM laws and regulations, looking over HIM processes, developing or altering HIM policies and procedures, creating standards for HIM functions, joining forces with other departments for HIM interoperability, and delivering technical expertise on HIM.
How do I register for the exam?
Once you have read and meet the eligibility guidelines, you can register for the exam online, or via a paper application. After registration is complete, you will receive an Authorization to Test document, which opens a 4-month period in which you can schedule and take your exam.
What is the cost of the exam?
If you are a premier AHIMA member, the cost of the exam is $217.55. As a regular AHIMA member, you will pay $229. The non-member price is $299.
What are the testing dates and locations?
This exam is administered on a continuous basis, at hundreds of testing centers in the United States and Canada.
What should I do the day of the exam?
Report to the testing site at least 30 minutes early. This will give you the time needed for checking into the center. Be sure not be late to the testing center, as doing so, could prevent you from being able to take the exam. If tardiness prevents you from being able to take the exam, you will not receive a refund of the fees paid.
Bring two valid forms of identification with you. This ID cannot be temporary, expired, or photocopies. Your primary form of identification must include your name, signature, and photo. The secondary ID must have your name and signature, at a minimum. If not, you will not be permitted to take the exam.
Personal items cannot be taken into the testing area. Some of these items include a cell phone, calculator, other electronic devices, food/drink, briefcase, or purse.
What happens after I take the exam?
Before leaving the testing center, you will receive a score report that indicates whether you have passed or failed the exam.
What is the minimum passing score of this exam?
The score range for this exam is 100-400. The minimum passing score of this exam is 300.
How Can I Prepare for the RHIT Test?
That’s a great question. We’ve broken down the answer into three parts.
- Do yourself a favor and study. Do not walk in unprepared. We have recommended prep materials below, but that only helps if you actually try. Plus, studying is actually proven to be the best antidote to test anxiety.
- Take care of yourself. Make sure you’re eating well, exercising, and sleeping. All of these things are scientifically linked to brain performance. If you take care of your body, you’ll be helping your grades.
