TEAS* Test
The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) was created as a forecast of how prepared a candidate is based upon prior education. It is meant to give the student an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge gleaned from formal education up to that point in time. It is taken before being admitted into a nursing education program, and is one of the ways used to determine if the student is ready. Each group or school will determine its own standards for passing scores, which each candidate must meet in order to gain admittance to that group or school.
There are four subject areas covered on the TEAS test: math, science, English and reading. The questions are in multiple-choice format. For the math exam, the student will need knowledge about whole and partial (fractions or decimals) numbers, metric measurement and exchange, algebra, percentages and comparing numbers with ratio or quotients. For reading, the student must demonstrate understanding of paragraphs and text selections, and will need to be able to deduce information and use logical reasoning to come to an opinion or ending. For English, the student needs to understand punctuation and structure, the grammatical arrangement of words in sentences, interpreting vocabulary based on the surrounding text and spelling. For science, the student needs to have a grasp of scientific logic and familiarity, the study of living organisms, chemistry, the basic structure of the human body and how it functions, basic physical principles and a general familiarity with science.
As your test day approaches, make sure that you have had plenty of time to study. Review a TEAS test study guide or study using TEAS test flashcards so that you strengthen any areas that might be more difficult for you on the test. You'll have the rest of your life to enjoy being successful on the exam, but you can only spend time between now and your test day to get prepared. Study hard and maximize your chances of success.
