GHSGT Exam Review

High school students in Georgia, in order to earn a high school diploma, must pass the Georgia High School Graduation Test, commonly referred to as the GHSGT. This test was recently instituted due to concerns from colleges, universities, and employers that students graduating from Georgia High School were not adequately prepared with the basic skills and knowledge to go on to pursue higher education or handle the requirements of a job, even though they possessed a Georgia high school diploma. The test consists of five sections, all of which must be passed in order to receive a diploma-writing, English, math, social studies and science. Students will have their first chance to pass the GHSGT in their junior year; if they pass on the first attempt, they're in the clear and don't have to worry about the test any longer. Should they fail all or part of the GHSGT, they'll have a total of four more opportunities to take and pass the test before graduation.

Minimum passing scores for each section are-English, 500 to pass, and 538 to achieve Pass Plus; math, 500 to pass and 535 for Pass Plus; science, 500 to pass and 526 to achieve Pass Plus; social studies 500 to pass and 531 to achieve Pass Plus. Pass Plus is a higher distinction that is reflected on a student's diploma showing that they've achieved academic success beyond the bare minimum graduation requirements. On these four sections of the GHSGT, the student will be asked to answer various multiple choice questions. The writing test is different, of course. Students will be assigned a topic and required to write a brief essay in response. On this portion, they'll be graded on their writing style, how well they organize and present facts and details, their understanding and usage of proper grammar and vocabulary, and their skill at structuring sentences. Passing the GHSGT is a hurdle that must be overcome if a Georgia high school student hopes to succeed in life after school, either in the work place or in pursuing higher education. The test should not be taken lightly, as failure to pass will have serious and life long ramifications. It's strongly suggested that students get a good study guide and prep program before attempting to take the GHSGT.
