FTCE Exam Review
Is a career teaching school kids in Florida in your future? If so, no matter if you want to teach elementary school, middle school, or high school, you’ll need to take a test to qualify for the job, which is called the Florida Teacher Certification Examination, or FTCE. The pencil and paper form of the test is given several times a year, with the main dated being in October, January, March, April, and July. There are also supplemental test dates in September, December, and June. There is also a computer version of many of the FTCE tests, which means they can be taken at your leisure. Of course, the FTCE isn’t just a single “test”, but a wide ranging variety of tests. There are two main tests that everyone taking the FTCE will have to take-General Knowledge and Professional Education. Then there are the subject matters tests, with lots of choices in that area. The one you take will depend on what courses and ages you hope to teach. Each pencil and paper test costs $25, so you’re looking at spending at least $75 (if you only want to be certified in one subject area). The fees for the computer tests are much higher, running around $75 each. The pen and paper test is given in locations all over Florida; your local school will have the info, or if you’re in college your advisor should have the dates and locations.
Some of the FTCE tests can be all day affairs, depending on which ones you’re taking, while others are only a few hours. Again, you’ll want to check with your advisor for specifics on test durations and scheduling. The Professional Education test consists of 120 multiple choice questions, and takes nearly three hours to complete. Taking all three sections of the General Knowledge FTCE Test-Reading, Math, and English Language Skills-will take three hours and 15 minutes to complete, and you’ll be answering 125 multiple choice questions. The various subject tests have different numbers of questions and different time lengths. Also, there are many more FTCE subject tests available in pencil and paper format than on computer, although that is quickly changing. If your dream is to be a teacher in a Florida school, you’re going to have to get past the FTCE testing process. It’s highly recommended that you get good study materials and prep guides to maximize your chances of a passing grade, and minimize your chances of failing.
