CUNY Exam Review
One of the biggest university systems in the nation is the City University of New York, or CUNY for short. CUNY has lots of different schools and campuses, including 11 senior colleges and six community colleges. All told, there are almost half a million students enrolled in the CUNY college system. If you're thinking of enrolling in a college that's part of the CUNY system, you'll need to show that you're capable of doing the work that's required of you as a CUNY student. You can do this by achieving minimum scores on the ACT test, the SAT test, or the New York Regents test. However, if you fail to achieve an acceptable score on one of these tests, you may still qualify for admission to CUNY by taking and passing the CUNY Skill Assessment test. This is a test designed by the educators and administrators at CUNY to meet the specific needs of that school in determining who is qualified for admission and who isn't. Prospective students who haven't achieved the necessary score on the other admissions test can use the CUNY Skill Assessment as a second chance for admission. It's a three part test. The first part is a test of reading skills.
One nice thing about this part is that there is no time limit, so you can take your time and make sure you've got the correct answer without rushing. You'll be given several passages to read, and then you'll have to answer a series of multiple choice questions for each passage showing that you understand what you read, and can make logical inferences based on what you read. For the reading portion, you'll need a score of at least 70 to pass. The next part of the CUNY Skill Assessment test is the writing portion. This does have a time limit-you'll have sixty minutes to write a brief essay based on a short story concerning a tough choice someone has to make, and you'll need explain what you think the right action is, and why you think that. A minimum passing score of 7 is needed on the essay portion. The math portion is the last part of the CUNY test, and it's divided into four sections-basic math and pre-algebra, algebra, college algebra, and trigonometry. It's multiple choice and not timed, so you can work at your own pace. Different math scores are required for different colleges of the CUNY system, but at a minimum you'll need to score at least a 27 on the first two parts of the math section to be admitted to CUNY. One more thing to keep in mind is that if you fail to make a passing score on the CUNY test, there is a long wait to take it again. It's essential that you get a study guide or prep course before attempting the test.
