CLAST Exam Review
What is CLAST? It stands for College Level Academic Skills Test, and it’s a test that you may encounter at some point in your academic career. It’s basically a test of knowledge acquired in the freshman and sophomore years of college. It’s kind of a way of measuring sufficient academic progress in the students who take it. Although not as well known as other standardized college tests, CLAST is a requirement for many students. Some colleges and universities require that all students must pass the CLAST before receiving a two year associated degree. Other colleges and universities require any student hoping to be admitted to junior and senior level classes to first take and pass the CLAST. What do you need to know about the CLAST? Well, first, you’ll need to check with your college or university about scheduling the test. If they require it, testing will almost certainly take place at the college itself, and they’ll have all the information you need about dates and locations, and any fees (although it’s likely that the cost of CLAST testing is included in your tuition and fees).
There are several CLAST tests in various subjects, but the vast majority of people will be tested in English language skills, reading, and math, and will probably also have to write an essay. Except for the essay portion, all of these tests are in multiple choice format. On the English language skills, you’ll be tested for knowledge of proper grammar, sentence structure, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary. In order to pass this portion, you’ll need a score of at least 265 on the CLAST scale. The reading portion of the test will involve reading short passages and then answering several questions demonstrating that you can not only understand and interpret what you read, but that you can also make inferences and assumptions based on the passage. On this portion, you’ll need a 260 on the CLAST scale to pass. The math portion will consist of questions on all math topics you should have a grasp on by your junior year of college, such as basic math, algebra, statistics and probability, geometry, etc. You’ll also need a score of 260 on this section to pass. On the essay, you’ll show that you can write and argue points in clear, proper English, and you’ll need a score of at least 4 to pass this portion. The CLAST tests can be critical to your college and academic career, and it’s imperative that you go into them well prepared, as failing can hold you back. A good prep guide is strongly recommended.
